We are a small sanctuary in East Central Alabama, situated between Wedowee and Roanoke.
Long before we arrived here, there was a child with an innate pull toward creatures most found inconvenient, awkward, or expendable. And with that pull came a stubborn streak to save them anyway—much to her parents’ chagrin.
What began as a child’s need to protect and save never really faded. Over the years, it evolved into adopting the dogs, cats, horses, and others that found their way into her universe. Partnering with an understanding, animal-loving spouse (who hasn’t filed for divorce in spite of the sheer number of animals brought home over the years) and equally animal-loving children, Rock Stand Hill Sanctuary was finally born in 2026.
Today, Rock Stand Hill is the permanent culmination of that lifelong habit. We don’t operate as a revolving shelter or a high-turnover adoption hub; we are an intentional landing zone for the hard-luck cases, the overlooked, and the lifers. Because true sanctuary requires resources and responsibility, we only commit to those we can sustain for their lifetimes. Across our pastures and in our home, everything revolves around a singular, enduring promise: once they cross our threshold, their battle to simply survive is over.
They are home.
Rock Stand Hill Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to the prevention of cruelty to animals through permanent sanctuary, regional rescue collaboration, and practical community advocacy. Our active work is driven by two core commitments:
Surrender Prevention & Rescue Logistics:
The most effective rescue is the one that never has to happen. We actively partner with qualified 501(c)(3) rescues and municipal programs to fight animal surrender driven by financial hardship. We help stock and sustain the local pet food pantry—moving feed and wellness resources into the hands of local families so pets can remain where they should—in their homes.
Lifelong Sanctuary & Practical Advocacy:
We provide a permanent home for our resident beasties across our pastures and within our home, while serving as a community voice for responsible animal stewardship. We promote the benefits of spay/neuter initiatives, disease mitigation, and preventative care—protecting family pets and regional livestock alike. To support our East Central Alabama neighbors, we maintain a directory of Area Veterinary Offices.
Facility:
Rock Stand Hill Sanctuary operates an intentional, closed intake model to ensure our pastures, medical capabilities, and daily resources are never compromised.
No Public Surrenders: We do not accept unsolicited surrenders, stray intakes, or emergency animal drop-offs.
Private Working Facility: To protect the biosecurity, behavioral rehabilitation, and safety of our lifelong residents, our acreage is a private working facility closed to unannounced visitors.
